General Surgery Residency Program 

The Residency Program in General Surgery provides a thorough experience in the evaluation and management of a large number of patients with disorders that constitute the entire field of General Surgery. There is a deep conviction at Duke that a broad experience in operative surgery is essential for the properly trained surgeon. Surgical residents rotate not only through Duke University Hospital, but also at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the Durham Regional Hospital, and the Asheville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. <more>
 
Surgical Education and Activities Lab
 
Duke Surgery opened the Surgical Education and Activities Lab (SEAL) in 2005 to train residents, fellows, medical students, and faculty on simulation equipment in a risk-free environment to advance medical education and improve patient safety. <more>
 

Physician Assistant Surgical Residency Program

Welcome to the Duke Physician Assistant Surgical Residency Program and to Durham, North Carolina, birthplace of the physician assistant profession. The PA Profession originated at Duke in the mid 1960s. Dr. Eugene A. Stead, Jr., then Chairman of the Department of Medicine, believed that physician assistants could increase consumer access to health services by extending the time and skills of the physician. His vision, guidance, and influence were instrumental in founding the Duke PA Program which continues to flourish as one of the premier PA training programs in the country.  <more>


General Surgery Fellowship Programs

Del Stickel Abdominal Transplant Fellowship Program
The Del Stickel Abdominal Transplant Fellowship Program is a two-year American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) surgical fellowship program approved for liver, kidney, and pancreas. The Transplant Fellowship Program accepts one fellow every two years. <more>
 
Endosurgical Fellowship
The Duke University Clinical Endosurgical Fellowship is a one year program (July 1 to June 30) designed to expand the knowledge and skills of the participant in the field of Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery. <more>
 
Fellowship Program in Surgical Critical Care
Duke offers a one-year fellowship in Surgical Critical Care, with one position available per year. This ACGME-accredited fellowship is devoted to broad-based intensive clinical training primarily based in the Duke University Medical Center Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). <more>
 
Surgical Oncology Fellowship
The Duke Surgical Oncology Fellowship is a two-year fellowship dedicated to training the future leaders of surgical oncology.  Initiated in July 2008, the fellowship is structured according to guidelines established by the Society of Surgical Oncology incorporating a broad clinical experience with options for specialization during the second-year electives. <more>
 
Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program
Duke offers a two-year ACGME accredited vascular surgery training program, accepting one Fellow annually.  The curriculum, which includes training in open surgical techniques, endovascular techniques, diagnostic modalities (MR, CT, ultrasound, and PVRs) and related fields (Cardiology, Hematology, Interventional Radiology), also includes a three month block of time devoted exclusively to research.  <more>

 
Medical Student Program
The surgery core course is given during the second year and consists of an eight week clinical clerkship. The primary goal of the course is the presentation of concepts and principles which characterize the disciplines of surgery. Medical students are strongly encouraged to visit this site often to obtain up-to-date schedules and information. <more>
