Training:
MD, Ohio State University College of Medicine, 1981

Residency:
Surgery, Brigham and Women's Hospital (Massachusetts), 1981-1988

Clinical Interests:
Gastrointestinal surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, surgical complications of pancreatitis, benign and malignant esophageal, biliary, pancreatic and gastric disease, complicated abdominal wall reconstructions

Research Interests:
My laboratory is engaged in several areas of research all relating to gastrointestinal physiology:

1) We are currently studying upper gut motility as it relates to the cycloxygenace pathway.  These studies are part of a drug development program in collaboration with GlaxoWellcome.  The cycloxygenace pathway is important in the regulation of lower gastroesophageal sphincter function and gastric motility.  Specifically COX-2 inhibitors appear to increase lower esophageal sphincter pressure and augment gastric emptying.  This combination would be very effective in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux and gastroparesis.  Our current studies are evaluating the mechanism of action of COX-2 inhibitors on upper gut function.
2) In collaboration with Toku Takahashi (a PhD in my laboratory), we are studying colonic motility as it relates to short chain fatty acid (SCFA).  SCFA appear to augment colonic motility and at intraluminal physiologic levels and cause mucosal damage at toxic levels.  The mechanism of action of short chain fatty acids on colonic motility is being studied as well as the mechanism of toxic damage.
3) In collaboration with the Cook Catheter Company, we are currently studying the role of pig small intestine as a prosthetic agent in the treatment of gastrointestinal perforation.  Commercially available pig small intestine tissue contains a variety of growth factors that appear to augment in-growth into this bio/prosthetic material.  We are currently engaged in a collaborative effort with the Cook Catheter Company to explore the effectiveness of this bio/prosthetic device and the mechanism of tissue ingrowth in both the gastrointestinal tract and the abdominal wall.
